It’s high school All-Star season with a few really good takes

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Jun 25, 2023

Here are a few tids and bits as we get ready to head into the last week of June, just another sign that summer goes by way quicker than it’s evil counterpart, Old Man Winter:

These last couple of weeks of June are the time for spring sports All-Star events, but also for a couple of local-filled events that are superb: the annual NH High School Girls Hockey Invitational that was last Sunday at Tri-Town in Hooksett as well as the thrilling Friday night annual CHaD East-West All-Star Football Game at Saint Anselm that saw Team West beat Team East in double OT. Then there was the Senior All-Star Game at Holman Stadium earlier in the week.

The hockey game is one that doesn’t get too much limelight, local businessman Jon Goode’s worthwhile creation of 2020 . He’s had the games four straight years, and the dates of have gone from August, to July and now to Father’s Day last weekend.

That may be its permanent date. “I think we’re going to stick with this date, everybody seems to like it,” Goode said. “We have no hockey conflict with the girls. And the Father’s Day tie-in is really nice. You talk to the Dads, and all they want to do is watch their daughters play hockey. It’s the perfect Father’s Day.”

The event has certainly grown in stature, as several of the players involved in the Junior-Senior game last Sunday (there’s also a Freshmen-Sophomore preliminary contest) were Divison I commits. Top schools such as Boston College, Northeastern, Boston University, UNH, etc.

“Obviously girls hockey has picked up as the years go on,” Goode said. “The girls playing in this game are unbelievable. The talent level, the Division I commits. The thing I love is they’re already committed, they don’t have to play in this game, so I take that as a real compliment.

“And it’s also a great vehicle for girls who aren’t committed yet. That’s probably one thing that’s increased, the college interest. I know we had a lot of college coaches here watching the game. That’s definitely picked up, the interest level of colleges in the game.”

—- Golfers, don’t forget if you want to compete in the Nashua City Golf tourney that the deadline to register for the July 22-23 event is in less than two weeks. According to tournament officials, the registration list is “extremely light” for the championship division.

For complete eligibility requirements, vist the qualifying page at NashuaCityChampionship.com.

The event will be at Nashua Country Club for the first round on Saturday, July 22, and then move to Sky Meadow on Sunday, July 23 for the second and final round.

— This is the time National Football League coaches absolutely dread, the five weeks or so between mandatory minicamp and the official start of training camp. Why? Just look at the last week. Patriots minicamp was finished no more than 48 hours before corner Jack Jones got himself arrested for the alleged foolish act of possessing loaded weapons as he went through security at Logan. Then the absurd – but smart legally, one could surmise – grandstanding by his lawyer, Rosemary Scapicchio after Tuesday’s arraignment. That was the morning. Then Tuesday night we hear that Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill is being investigated for an alleged assault in a bar. Great. Adults who make way too much money are set free for a few weeks with all the free time in the world and there’s always something bad happening. Now in the extreme case, if one remembers, that was the time when the late Aaron Hernandez ill fated crime saga began in New England.

— It was sad to hear of the passing of former Nashua lacrosse coach Gordie Webb, a New England legendary figure in the sport. Funny story: Go back to the mid 1990s, when we had heard the name Gordie Webb in the from those around Nashua lacrosse but had never come into contact with him. Well, during our, well, more athletic days this humbles scribe was working out regularly at a local gym when a skinny guy who always wore a golf shirt and shorts would be working out, too, clapping as he moved around between sets. “Who is this guy?” we thought. A casual hello, or helping with a spot, etc.

It had been that way for weeks. Then come to find out Nashua High had a new lacrosse coach, and when yours truly went to meet him, well – you can guess the rest.

You will be greatly missed, Gordie Webb.
