Sylvester Graham Lecture
February 13, 2002
NCVS and The Suffield Historical Society hosted an evening with Sylvester Graham.
An impersonator from Old Sturbridge Village gave an authentic lecture on
health reform, such as Graham himself would've done in the early 1800's.
Sylvester Graham was a household name in the early 1800's. He was born
in Suffield, CT in 1794 and shortly after moved to Northhampton, MA.
He lectured year round on the benefits of health reform, which included
abstinence from flesh-eating, alcohol, caffeine, and other stimulants.
Graham was a very controversial figure. He invented the graham cracker
and graham flour because he believed no man or woman should consume
refined flour. He was "the" most influential pioneer of vegetarianism
in this country.
